Walking With Boreal Wildflowers : Walking With Wildflowers - 2013 Our 2011 Workshop was wildly successful. We located and photographed over 20 species of orchids, bog flowers and other boreal bloomers! Sessions included work along Lake Superior with landscapes and our famous "Cotton Water" technique! 2013 will provide some unique opportunities as some of our lessons will include areas burned in September/October 2011 by the Pagami Creek Wildfire. Cool Season, Warm Palette : Fall Color Tour 2013 Dates: September 27,28 and 29 Because of drought conditions in Minnesota's Arrowhead in 2011, it was critical that Steve and I spend several days scouting for the most color during the dates set aside for the workshop. Success! We found and photographed peak colors from the Superior National Forest and the North Shore of Lake Superior. Included was the "Enchanted Forest", vistas, some great wildlife as well as an intimate look at the Sawtooth Mountains including the "Honeymoon Trail". A Day at the Hegman Lake Pictographs : Coming soon! Day photo excursions to the Hegman Pictographs! New in 2013, spend a day tripping into the famous Hegman Lake pictographs. Some of the cleanest, most vibrant wall art in the entire BWCA/Quetico area! Starting the first of May or ice-out, whichever comes first! Continuing through ice up in the fall, and opening again when the ice is safe to travel early next winter. Although the pictographs are the main focus of the trip, thousands of additional subjects and landscapes of the boreal forest are there for the image taking. A typical day would include a fast-paced trip to the pictographs to take advantage of the warm morning sun hitting the easterly exposed wall. A leisurely trip back will include stops for landscape photography, looking for local orchids and other flora, keeping an eye along the shoreline for deer, moose, wolves or any other mammals native to the area. Eagles abound as do many other boreal bird species. Blueberry picking in season is a possibility. Cost: Open water 1-2 people: $300/full day, $225/half day - price includes canoe/paddles and transportation to the Hegman parking lot. Participants are responsible for life jackets, a packed lunch and all of their own camera gear. More than 2 people: add $50/person plus outfitting costs. If you don't have your own gear, I work with a number of outfitters in the area who would be happy to assist you. BWCA limits group size to 9, which includes the guide. Ice travel Excursion costs are the same. Depending on conditions, travel may be simply walking but might necessitate snowshoes or cross country skis. The Pow Wow Trail after the Pagami Creek Fire : Coming soon! Day photo excursions to the center of the Pagami Creek Fire to see the burn area and record the recovery of the forest! Starting the first of May! A ride down the Superior National Forest Road, The Tomahawk, to the site of the former lumber camp, Forest Center. This is one of the most accessible areas to view the most profound effects of the Pagami Creek Fire of Sepetember 2011. A short hike down to Isabella Lake will give a good look of a wide area that the fire covered. Then, a trip down the Pow Wow Trail - much of it in ground zero of the devastation. Most interesting is the regeneration of the area - not only the return of pioneer plants, but increasing numbers of birds, insects and mammals. Cost: $300/full day, $225/half day for 1-2 people. Cost includes transportation from Ely. Clients are responsible for their own camera gear and a lunch. Additional clients for $50/client. The terrain is level and walking is easy.
